Elevating Canadian Futsal: A Collaborative Coaching Venture with Portugal
Canada Soccer, in collaboration with the Portuguese Football Federation and Futsal Canada, has unveiled a pioneering initiative to enhance futsal coaching development within the nation. This groundbreaking partnership will enable Canadian futsal coaches to attain the prestigious Level 1 Futsal Coaching License offered by the Portuguese Federation, marking a significant milestone in Canadian futsal coaching education.

Dave Nutt, Interim Director of Development at Canada Soccer, expressed gratitude towards the Portuguese Football Federation and Futsal Canada for their collaboration on this project. “This initiative underscores our commitment to coach development as a fundamental component of player development. It offers a unique opportunity for coaches to elevate their skills, ultimately benefiting the growth of futsal talent across Canada,” Nutt stated.
Course Details
Set to take place in Lisbon, Portugal, from May 6-19, 2024, the course will be conducted in English and feature some of Portugal’s finest futsal educators. The curriculum will cover a comprehensive range of topics including methodology, psychology, management, organization, and tactics. This immersive program offers participants the chance to learn through both theoretical sessions and practical experiences, including visits to National Youth Futsal Team camps and viewing key matches from Portugal’s premier futsal leagues.
Leading the Course: Jorge Braz
At the helm of the course will be the esteemed Jorge Braz, celebrated for his unparalleled achievements including clinching the FIFA Futsal World Cup title, securing two UEFA Futsal Euro Championships, and being honored as the Best Men’s National Team Coach in the world on four occasions. Braz’s involvement highlights the course’s high caliber, promising an unrivaled learning experience for participants.
Dave Nutt highlighted the significance of this opportunity, especially in the context of the growing interest in futsal in Canada. “Learning from a luminary like Jorge Braz will provide our coaches with insights and strategies that are crucial for nurturing the sport’s development in our country,” he remarked.
Application Process
The course offers a limited number of seats, reflecting Canada Soccer’s aim to assemble a diverse group of coaching talents from across the nation. A special call is being made for female coaches to apply, in line with FIFA’s recent announcement of the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup, to support the expansion of women’s futsal. Canada Soccer is keen on attracting coaches who are deeply passionate about contributing to the growth and evolution of futsal within their communities and beyond.
