In May, the Board of the Portuguese Football Federation approved a comprehensive restructuring plan for senior futsal, males, and females with implications for the formats of competitions for the next three seasons.
The plan aims to guarantee the following objectives:
– Respond appropriately to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on futsal club activity
– Strengthen the balance and competitiveness of national futsal events
– Increase the number of futsal players
– Support clubs as fundamental pillars of development
– Create new affirmation spaces for young futsal players
The Federation decided that, in 2020/21, the Futsal League will have 16 clubs, a number that will be reduced in the following seasons, down to 12 in 2022/23. The two clubs that ascend to the futsal league will be found in an access test in which the 12 teams qualified for the ascent phase in the 2019/2020 season will participate, on a date to be defined according to the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic and authorization from the Directorate-General for Health to return to indoor competitions. In the 2020/21 season, the 2nd men’s futsal divisions will be played by 88 teams. In the following season, the men’s futsal division will have fewer clubs and a 3rd division will be created. The number of clubs in the 2nd and 3rd men’s futsal divisions will stabilize in 2022/2023.
The Women’s National Futsal Championship will be played by 16 teams in 2020/21 and will be reduced in the following seasons, down to a limit of 12 in 2022/23. In the 2020/21 season, a 2nd Division will be created, with 12 clubs from the National Cup.
The 2nd women’s futsal division will have 16 clubs in the 2022/23 season. In formation, the national men’s U19 championship will be played by 16 teams in 2020/21 and will be reduced in the following seasons, down to 12 in 2022/23. The national women’s U-19 championship will be created next season.
