Assessing Technical Skills and Anaerobic Fitness in Futsal Players: Validation and Reliability of a Novel Performance Test

A scientific study evaluated the reliability and validity of a novel futsal special performance test (FSPT) designed to assess players’ technical skills and anaerobic fitness. The study involved 36 futsal players (18 elite, 18 non-elite) who completed the FSPT, which measures dribbling, rotation, long and short passing, and shooting, along with the Wingate anaerobic test. Results demonstrated strong correlations between FSPT performance and anaerobic power (r = 0.5 to 0.91) and showed that the test effectively differentiates between elite and non-elite players. Coaches and instructors confirmed its content validity, and high inter-rater reliability was observed (r = 0.89). While the FSPT is a reliable and practical tool for assessing futsal performance, limitations include its applicability to female and younger players, variability in passing accuracy affecting reproducibility, and potential learning effects in non-elite players. The manuscript was revised based on reviewer feedback, with refinements in effect size interpretation and clarifications on test variability.

This research was conducted by Farid Farhani, Hamid Rajabi, Raoof Negaresh, Ajmol Ali, Sadegh Amani Shalamzari, and Julien S. Baker at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS). It was published in the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance in 2019.

If you prefer to listen to the findings of the research, we’ve created a podcast episode discussing the study in detail.

In this episode, we delve into the development and validation of the Futsal Special Performance Test (FSPT), its implications for assessing futsal players’ technical skills and anaerobic fitness, and the study’s key findings.
