Historic Futsal Tournament to Determine Oceania’s First Women’s Champion and World Cup Qualifier

The stage is set for a momentous occasion in women’s sports as the Solomon Islands prepares to host the first-ever OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup, which begins tomorrow, Saturday, August 17. The tournament will take place at the Friendship Hall in Honiara and runs until August 25, marking a historic milestone for women’s futsal in Oceania.

This pioneering event will see five nations—Tahiti, Fiji, New Zealand, Tonga, and the host Solomon Islands—compete in a week-long, round-robin format. The top two teams will advance to the final, while the 3rd and 4th placed sides will battle it out in a playoff for third place. The ultimate prize for the tournament winner is not only the championship title but also qualification for the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup, set to take place in the Philippines in 2025.

For the Solomon Islands, this tournament holds particular significance. Known as the home of the six-time OFC Futsal Men’s Champions, the nation now has the opportunity to showcase its growing prowess in the women’s game. A 14-member squad, blending experienced veterans and promising young talent, is ready to represent the nation on home soil, with high hopes of achieving another historic milestone.

Head Coach Arthur Barko, speaking at a pre-tournament press conference, expressed his enthusiasm and the importance of the event for the Solomon Islands. “We are pleased and honoured to host the first-ever OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup here in the Solomon Islands. We hope that all the teams enjoy their time here and experience the warmth of our hospitality,” Barko said.

Barko emphasized that the tournament is about more than just competition. “This event is about promoting and encouraging the growth of women’s futsal in our country. Men’s futsal has gained popularity over the years, and now we want to see that same passion transferred to the women’s game.”

He called on the community to support the team, saying, “We want families and friends to rally behind our women’s team. We must create an atmosphere where they feel the backing of the nation.”

Coach Barko expressed confidence in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion, noting, “Our squad is a mixture of senior players and youth, and we have put a lot of effort into preparing them for this moment. If we reach the final and manage to win, it will be a huge milestone, and we will continue to build on that momentum.”

New Zealand’s Futsal Ferns Head Coach, Nic Downes, also shared his team’s excitement about participating in this historic event. “Our expectations are to play well. The players have worked really hard, and we want to achieve what we came for,” Downes remarked.

Similarly, Fiji’s Head Coach Jerry Sam expressed gratitude for being part of the groundbreaking tournament. “It’s great to be here, and we thank OFC for organizing the first-ever futsal competition for women. We’re here to compete and also to learn as the game develops in Fiji.”

As the countdown to the tournament’s opening match against Tahiti begins, the Solomon Islands women’s futsal team is set to make history, with the entire nation rallying behind them.
