3-1 AGAINST LATVIA: GERMANY’S NATIONAL FUTSAL NATIONAL TEAM CAN CONTINUE TO DREAM
The German national futsal team saved their chance to take part in the elite round of the FIFA Futsal World Cup qualifiers. In their last group game, head coach Marcel Loosveld ’s team defeated Latvia 3-1 (2-0) in front of a record crowd of 2,704 spectators in the Seidensticker Hall in Bielefeld.
In Group 12, the German national futsal team is level on points with leaders Slovakia with five points in second place, which at least guarantees the playoffs, and Latvia is in third place with 3 points. This result is a great turnaround from the first match between both opponents as Latvia defeated 5-1 in their home opening game of the group. However, the German national futsal team turned their performance around securing a 1-1 draw with Slovakia at home and then a 0-0 draw with the nation away. In the last game of the group, on March 8, Latvia will host the Slovaks, however, the Latvians have already shown that they are a formidable opponent at home so it will be interesting to see if the team can turn this result around. The group winners and four best runners-up qualify directly into the elite round. The winners of each group qualify directly for the World Cup, while the four best runners-up advance to the playoffs. If a European association is selected to host the finals, only the two best runners-up will enter the elite round play-offs.
“I’m certainly satisfied because we confirmed the results of the last few games and also where we are at the moment. We started very well and deservedly led, should have even scored two or three more goals. You know what anything can happen in futsal, but the lads made up for it after the 2-1 draw,” said Loosveld to the DFB. “Latvia needs to win now in their next game and Slovakia doesn’t want to give up first place.”
